Basement Floor Coverings
Basement floor coverings have transformed by time and technology from sheet into vinyl flooring, or no-wax sheet vinyl, as it is called sometimes. In the last 20 years, it has evolved into a new shiny basement floor coverings available in hundreds of fashionable colors and patterns, with finishes made of new-age materials that make it easy to maintain. It comes in 12-foot sheets that are flexible and soft and warm underfoot, dealers say.
Vinyl flooring, especially popular for kitchens, bathrooms, halls and entryways, has crept into other rooms in the home, including children’s bedrooms, family rooms and dining rooms.
The old linoleum had burlap backing that made it stiff as a board and likely to crack, peel and become brittle, DuFresne said. Modern vinyl and urethane flooring is less porous and therefore more resistant to stains and scuffs, he said. Continue Reading

Bamboo Floating Floors
Bamboo floating floors offer a sleek look and an easy maintenance alternative to traditional linoleum and carpeting. Perhaps the most welcome feature is how easy they are to install. That translates into big savings to the homeowner looking to update flooring in a cost-effective, contemporary way.
The installation of a floating bamboo floor is simple and many flooring retailers provide some level of instruction on how to do the work yourself.
The most complicated part of the whole project is doing the math to figure out the square footage of the floor space that will be covered by the floating floor.
Floating flooring can be installed over existing flooring, except carpeting, so no demolition is required.
The flooring itself comes in packets that average about 20 square feet. It varies slightly from one manufacturer to another. The boards are tongue and groove that snap together on the sides and ends to give the floor its smooth finish without nails.
The foam underlay, the glue and tools are the other items needed for installation. Continue Reading

Australian Cypress Hardwood Flooring
Australian cypress hardwood flooring continues to regain the popularity it once enjoyed, more manufacturers and distributors are vying to supply the demand.
In Eastern Australia, the two major suppliers are Bruce Hardwood Floors, based in Melbourne but distributed locally, and Weston-based Satin Finish hardwood flooring. Depending on the location, Australian cypress hardwood flooring supplies up to half the hardwood flooring used in Australia. Products come in two surface finishes. “Dura-luster” is a factory applied, four-coat polyurethane, no-wax type finish, noted for durability and resistance to kitchen and other spills.
“Dura-satin” is a baked-in penetrating stain and wax, soft luster finish, recommended for home and industrial use, including high traffic areas. This finish requires waxing to maintain. Continue Reading
Air condition school yet hold in city school at times, the race for mayor has seemed like a race for school board – specifically a race to pledge air-conditioning for the remaining city schools that don’t have it.
So, as students from A. B. Hill Elementary School were dismissed from classes early Friday because of the summer heat, mayoral candidate Joe Ford was in front of Florida Elementary, the school used by the students as their own school awaits renovation, to blame the delays in heating and air conditioning school on Mayor Willie Herenton and the city school board.
“I think that the Board of Education and the mayor of this city should have gotten together and tried to come up with another plan,” Ford said. “We’re busing the kids anyway. But we bused them from one hot school to another.”
Ford first met reporters outside A. B. Hill, where an old sign on the door directs parents registering their children to go to nearby Florida Elementary, about a mile to the west. A. B. Hill, on Latham, is to be rebuilt as an air condition school on the same piece of property, but the start of the project has been delayed as the city school board debates changes in how it oversees construction.
The project, as well as all eight other air-conditioning and renovation projects now under way or pending, are funded.
“They told us that they would air-condition these schools immediately. They talk about red tape. I don’t understand that,” Ford said. “The City of Memphis put that $100 million up. That was the taxpayers’ dollars, and the school board has not acted on it. The mayor has not acted on it. I will get it done as the mayor of this city.”
Herenton responded to the frequent complaints about air- conditioning from his challengers Wednesday evening during a candidates forum at the Raleigh Community Center.
“Under the leadership of this mayor with $100 million bond funding, those monies are available to air-condition all of our schools,” Herenton said then. “And I believe that Dr. (Gerry) House (city school superintendent) and members of her team will get that job done.”
At Florida Elementary Friday, several teachers and parents shook Ford’s hand and complained about the heat inside the school. Some of the parents said they were already Ford supporters.
The teachers and A. B. Hill principal Arthur Hull were careful to walk the fence politically.
“I’m glad to get this half-day,” Hull said as teachers escorted the students to waiting buses shortly after noon.
“This building is not as cool as A. B. Hill. You think the grass is always greener on the other Air condition school
Asbestos flooring removal have introduced by Texas legislators include several measures intended to plug gaps in the state’s enforcement of asbestos safety laws, drawing on recommendations from the acting Texas health commissioner and the findings of an Austin American-Statesman special report. Two House bills by Rep. Garnet F. Coleman, D-Houston, would enlist cities’ help in assuring that buildings are inspected for asbestos before they are renovated or demolished and would repeal an exemption for the removal of asbestos flooring. An identical version of the inspection bill has been filed in the Senate by Mike Moncrief, D- Fort Worth .
“Many violators are unaware that asbestos flooring removal is still a problem, and regrettably, there are those that simply ignore the safety of workers and our community,” said Rep. Ann Kitchen, D-Austin, who with Rep. Elliott Naishtat, D-Austin, is a joint author of the House bills. The bills mirror recommendations in a Texas Department of Health staff report that Dr. Charles Bell, the acting health commissioner, sent to lawmakers.
In his accompanying letter, Bell said a series of articles in the American-Statesman raised public awareness about the hazards of improper asbestos removal and prompted numerous inquiries from legislators about options for fixing those problems. Continue Reading
Armstrong vinyl floor tiles has many advantages, one of the advantages of using it is that when damaged, they can be replaced without harming the tiles around them. Start by cutting a large X through the center of the damaged tile with a sharp utility knife. Warm the tile with a heat gun or gun- type hair dryer to soften the adhesive. Work the blade of a putty knife under a section of the cut X and carefully pry and peel pieces of the tile loose, working from the center toward the edge.
Removing the tile in this manner will prevent any damage to the edges of surrounding tiles. When the damaged tile is removed, clean any tile particles, dirt and old adhesive from the underlying surface, which is called underlayment. Even a small piece of dirt can disfigure a tile by making a bump in the surface.
If these are armstrong vinyl floor tile self-adhesive tiles, peel the paper backing from a new tile and carefully fit it in place. For good adhesion, press the tile down with a rolling pin or a wallpaper seam roller.
If the tiles are not self-adhesive, spread vinyl tile adhesive on the underlayment with a notched spreader, which leaves small ridges of adhesive. Press the tile into place with a roller and immediately clean up any squeezed-out adhesive around the edges, following directions on the adhesive container. Continue Reading
Andon lights is The biggest trend in decorative Christmas lights this season, says Home Depot’s PR manager, Nick Cowling,
LEDs growing popularity is due mostly to a massive reduction in energy costs over traditional light strings. According to Toronto Hydro, switching from incandescent bulbs to LEDs will reduce your energy costs by a whopping 80 to 90 per cent.
How does lights work? Cowling says every LED bulb contains what amounts to a small computer chip. “The computer chip generates just enough energy to create the light required to fill the bulb, whereas incandescent light peaks up and down,” he explains.
Not only are lights more andon lights energy efficient than traditional strings, but they also last approximately 100 times longer, Cowling says.
“They are also safer for homes with children and pets because they don’t get hot and they are made out of plastic, as opposed to glass, which can shatter when dropped,” adds Lisa Gibson, Canadian Tire PR rep.
Lights may also help save your sanity. If you’ve ever had to deal with a malfunctioning sequenced string of lights, you’re well aware of the time and frustration associated with tracking down that one rogue bulb. LEDs are not laid out in sequence, so you’ll never have to deal with that holiday hassle again. Continue Reading

Antler light fixtures in your bedroom look like? If you can’t remember, chances are it’s one of those boring glass globe or bowl things you notice only once every year or so when a bulb blows out. An accumulation of fly and moth carcasses is a dead giveaway that you’re not paying any attention to your light fixture. It’s time to change to something that turns you on when you turn it on.
This job is a piece antler light fixture of cake. Taking down a normal ceiling light and putting a new one in its place should take no more than an hour to complete.
You’ll need a screwdriver, a circuit tester and a sturdy step ladder or ladder stool. Circuit testers are available wherever electrical tools are sold, and a simple one usually costs less than $5.
Start the job by cutting the power to the fixture you’re changing. This is done by going to your house’s main service panel and turning off the circuit breaker to that room or by removing the appropriate fuse. Continue Reading
